We have already discussed the Battle of Badr. The biggest loss to the Quraysh in this battle was the death of their great leaders. He could never get over this loss. Abu Lahab did not participate in this battle, all the other leaders except him died in the battle. Now the person we will discuss is Umayya bin Khalaq. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) had previously said about Umayya that he would die at the hands of the Muslims. So the fear of death was working in his mind, so when the time came for the Battle of Badr, he did not want to fight. But Abu Jahl angered him so much that he agreed to fight. At the same time, this Umayya was Bilal’s master and servant, and he could not accept that Bilal would convert to Islam, and so he used to brutally torture Bilal, but he did so in a planned manner.
Although Umayyad was a tyrant, his wife was the opposite. She converted to Islam a few years later. She loved Muslims because of their faith, even though they killed her husband and child, and she hated her child because he was an Islamophobe.
When the Quraysh arrived at the battlefield of Badr, they saw that the Muslims were outnumbered and began to argue about how they would cope with the large forces of the Quraysh.
Allah Almighty says in this regard:
[Remember] when the hypocrites and those in whose hearts was disease said, “Their religion has deluded those [Muslims].” But whoever relies upon Allah – then indeed, Allah is Exalted in Might and Wise.
(Quran 8:49)
Those who did not accept Islam had a tragic outcome because they were forced to fight against Islam.
Even if an infidel sympathizes with Muslims, Muslims should also sympathize with them.
Uthba Ali ibn Mu’ayt, who was the most heinous of infidels. He was killed after the war. We will discuss his story a little later. This time we will learn the story of some of the brave warriors in the Battle of Badr.
Narrated by Ibn Hisham, Mehsa was the first person killed in the Battle of Badr. He was a freed slave of Umar bin Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him). The second martyr was Harith ibn Sahaya, The one who died from an arrow shot by mistake. Saeed ibn Khasa is another martyr of the Battle of Badr. When the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) called for war, he expressed his desire to fight with his father, but it was not possible for both of them to go to war because one of them had to stay at home to look after the family.
When Saeed ibn Khasa got ready to go to war, his father said, “I will go to war.” But Saeed ibn Khasa replied, “Look, father, if there were any other gift in war than paradise, I would have sent you to war.” He was martyred in the Battle of Badr and shortly after that his father died in the Battle of Uhud.
Father of the famous companion Abu ibn Umayya, Al Aljaz were on the side of the Quraysh. And his father was a great enemy of Islam. He was blinded by rage because his own son was against the Chorus in the war. He tried to hurt his son whenever he got the chance on the battlefield.
But his son didn’t want to hurt his father so he kept avoiding him but suddenly his father hit him from in front of him so he killed his father to protect himself.
This incident was a highly reprehensible act in the Arab era at that time. Allah Almighty says in the Quran:
You will not find a people who believe in Allah and the Last Day having affection for those who oppose Allah and His Messenger, even if they were their fathers or their sons or their brothers or their kindred. Those – He has decreed within their hearts faith and supported them with spirit from Him. And We will admit them to gardens beneath which rivers flow, wherein they abide eternally. Allah is pleased with them, and they are pleased with Him – those are the party of Allah. Unquestionably, the party of Allah – they are the successful.
(Quran 58:22)
This verse was in praise of Abu ibn Umayya. After the Battle of Badr, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) threw the bodies of the Quraysh into a dirty well and gave them a piece of land.
At this time an incident occurred, we discussed earlier that Uthba was a wise man. Since he knew that Islam was the true religion, he repeatedly warned the Quraysh not to participate in the war. But his advice was of no use to Abu Jahl’s cunning, and he himself was defeated in battle.
In fact, Allah had written their fate, so even those who did not want to participate in the war eventually participated in the war. Abu Hudhaifa was his son, he watched with a shocked face as his father’s body was thrown away. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) asked him if he was saddened by the fate of his father. Then he said, “By God, I have no regrets about my father’s fate.” The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) prayed for him.
After the victory in the Battle of Badr, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) stayed on the outskirts of Badr for three days because he wanted to make sure that all the enemies had been killed. There is no possibility of a counterattack from their side. During this time, those who died in battle were buried. Those who died in the Battle of Badr were buried on the outskirts of Badr. The companions also needed rest.
On the third day, when the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) started walking, his companions followed him as usual.
Then he walked to the well where the bodies of the Quraysh had been thrown. When he reached there, he called out everyone by name. He said to them, “Have you found the promise of your Lord true?”
Then Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) that the people you are talking to have no soul in their bodies. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, “By Allah, they hear more than you do.”
The Prophet (peace be upon him) sent two companions to Medina to convey the news of the victory.
Now we know what the role of Satan was. In this regard, Allah Almighty says:
And [remember] when Satan made their deeds pleasing to them and said, “No one can overcome you today from among the people, and indeed, I am your protector.” But when the two armies sighted each other, he turned on his heels and said, “Indeed, I am disassociated from you. Indeed, I see what you do not see; indeed I fear Allah. And Allah is severe in penalty.”
(Quran 8:48)
Satan came in person to witness the Battle of Badr. Iblis wanted in his heart that the war would take place by any means possible so that the Muslims would be destroyed. But when the angels descended from the sky on the battlefield, the devil fled upon seeing them.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said that Satan was never humiliated like he was in the Battle of Badr. We saw how Satan deceives people. He himself encouraged the Quraysh to fight and then fled from the battle.
The next day, the Prophet (peace be upon him) entered Medina with the prisoners. In this war, Allah Almighty helped the Muslims with angels. If He had not helped them, the Muslims would have been defeated. On the other hand, a man named Hudhaifa brought news of the defeat of the Quraysh in Mecca. He ran towards Mecca and began to call out the names of all those who had died. The people of Mecca could not believe that they had lost the war and that their great leader had been killed. One day after the victory in the Battle of Badr, Abu Rafaya was sitting in the courtyard of the Kaaba. Abu Lahab was sitting in front of him with his back turned. Abu Lahab asked Abu Sufyan, “Sit down, nephew, what is the news of the war?” Abu Sufyan replied that nothing had happened, and when the battle began, we surrendered ourselves to them to be defeated. They killed us however they wanted and imprisoned us however they wanted. But we will not blame them because the people we were fighting were some people dressed in white riding horses between the sky and the earth. By God, we were powerless to deal with them.
Abu Sufyan wanted to say that the Quraysh were indeed defeated, but the Muslims had no credit for it. Full credit was given to the men dressed in white riding horses descending from the sky.
Hearing this, Abu Rafi could not keep himself quiet and exclaimed that by Allah, they were the angels of Allah.
Hearing this, Abu Lahab became very angry and punched Abu Rafi. Finally, the others also hit Abu Lahab on the head with a stick.
A few days later, Abu Lahab fell ill with a serious illness, and a sore began to form on his head, spreading throughout his body. Abulhab died but no one came to bury him. After three days, his body began to decompose and other people went to his sons and said, “Aren’t you ashamed that your father is lying dead?” They replied, “We are afraid of that mysterious disease, so we cannot bury him.”
Then they dragged Abu Lahab’s body outside Mecca and covered it with stones from a distance.
Those who harmed Islam through word of mouth or propaganda were severely punished during the time of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him). It has been seen many times that those who fought with weapons have been forgiven, but on the other hand, those who mocked the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) have been punished. The next episode will discuss the reaction to the Battle of Badr.
