In the last episode, we discussed the establishment of mosques in the day, and in this episode, we will discuss the establishment of a bond of brotherhood between the Ansar and the Muhajirs.
We have discussed this several times before, but we are still discussing the fact that Arab society was previously tribal. And everyone was proud of their tribe. The people of every tribe will always side with their own tribe, whether they make mistakes or do good.
Islam changed this idea that no matter how high or low a person is, if he does not have faith in him, he is worthless. Islam recognizes the primacy of faith over tribal identity. Brothers to each other according to Islam. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) took this identity of brotherhood from the life of Medina, but rather began to give it from the life of Mecca.
But when Islam was established in Medina, the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) took some measures to establish brotherhood among the people of different tribes who came from outside Medina.
Allah says:
And hold firmly to the rope of Allah all together and do not become divided. And remember the favor of Allah upon you – when you were enemies and He brought your hearts together and you became, by His favor, brothers. And you were on the edge of a pit of the Fire, and He saved you from it. Thus does Allah make clear to you His verses that you may be guided.
(Quran 3:103)
Allah says:
And brought together their hearts. If you had spent all that is in the earth, you could not have brought their hearts together; but Allah brought them together. Indeed, He is Exalted in Might and Wise.
(Quran 8:63)
Here Allah is telling the Prophet (peace be upon him) that the brotherhood among Muslims is something that Allah Himself has created.
Allah Almighty says that even if you were to give them wealth with both hands, they would not love each other, but Allah created love between them from Himself.
We mentioned earlier that there was a long-standing conflict between the Hatzat and Aus tribes, and there were bloody clashes between them.
But when they believed, the enmity between them was removed, and they became brothers to each other. Islam even refers to them collectively as Ansar, without mentioning their Hajjaj and Aws tribes.
The Ansar were the residents of Medina and the Muhajirin were the immigrants from Mecca.
They did not know each other and it was never possible for people from one Arab tribe to adopt people from another tribe. But the love that was created between them was from Allah. Allah established brotherly relations among the Ansar, as a result of which ignorance was eliminated, as in the past.
The bond that was formed between them was the bond of Islam, as Allah Almighty says:
And [also for] those who were settled in al-Madinah and [adopted] the faith before them. They love those who emigrated to them and find not any want in their breasts of what the emigrants were given but give [them] preference over themselves, even though they are in privation. And whoever is protected from the stinginess of his soul – it is those who will be the successful.
(Quran 59:9)
Allah Almighty has mentioned several honors of the Ansar.
Allah Almighty has also mentioned this:
For the poor emigrants who were expelled from their homes and their properties, seeking bounty from Allah and [His] approval and supporting Allah and His Messenger, [there is also a share]. Those are the truthful.
(Quran 59:8)
Through these two verses, Allah Almighty has awakened a sense of responsibility in the minds of the Ansar.
This sense of brotherhood was created five months after the migration, and according to some, nine months later. Many have said that this sense of brotherhood began after the construction of the Prophet’s Mosque.
But in fact, this issue of brotherhood was always ambiguous. And when the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) built the Prophet’s Mosque, he prayed together for the Mujahideen and the Ansar. A Mujahir and an Ansar are paired together. One such example is Khadija with Abu Bakr Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him).
Saad ibn (may Allah be pleased with him) among these is the story of brotherhood.
He was a Mujahir and he was one of the 10 people who were given the good news of Paradise. After he migrated, he stayed at the house of Saad (may Allah be pleased with him). He himself narrated that after the migration, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) established a bond of brotherhood between me and them. Saad (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I am the richest of the Ansar and I give you half of my wealth. I have two wives, tell me which one you like and I will divorce her. Abdur Rahim was a very hardworking and respected man. He replied, “Brother, I don’t need any of these things. Rather, tell me if there is a market here where I can trade.”
The next day, Abdur Rahman was seen going to the market and buying some ghee and dried dates. Within a few days, he established his business.
After a few days, the Prophet Muhammad saw some yellow marks on Abdur Rahman’s body. In those days, girls used to use something with yellow powder on their weddings. Seeing that, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) thought that Abdur Rahman must have married. He asked Abdur Rahman, “Are you married?” He replied, “Yes, I am.” Then he asked who he married. Abdur Rahman replied that he had married an Ansari woman.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) asked what he had given him for the marriage. Abdur Rahman replied that he had given him a gold coin equal to eight dates. Abdur Rahman arrived in Medina a few days ago and has already made a lot of money from his business. This means that Allah has blessed his business.
The Ansar supported the Mujahideen in every way. One day they came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and said, “O Messenger of Allah, divide our date palm gardens between us and the Muhajirun.”
They wanted to give half of their garden to the Muhajirin. But the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) did not give permission and they silently accepted the Messenger of Allah’s (peace be upon him) order. But they were looking for an opportunity to help the Muhajirs. They came up with another proposal. This time they said, “Okay, then the Muhajirs will work in our gardens and they will get half of the produce.” The Mahajirs agreed to this. Later, it was seen that the Ansar were doing the most work in the garden. The Ansar came to work on their own, the Muhajirs did not have to do much work.
The Muhajirin were amazed at the generosity of the Ansar and came to Islam and said, “O Messenger of Allah, we have never seen such good people as them.” And they work to feed themselves and give us half of the harvest.
Seeing their condition, the Muhajirin said, “O Messenger of Allah, the Ansar have got all the virtues, and we have got nothing.” The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “If you pray for them and praise them, you will also be entitled to the same amount.”
From this incident we understand two things that there were two things among the Muhajirin and the Ansar: one was sincerity and the second was generosity.
In the beginning, the relationship between the Ansar and the Muhajirin was one of brotherhood. When an Ansar died, his property would be inherited by the person who inherited Muhajirin.
Later, inheritance laws were limited to blood relatives. Now we will discuss the establishment of this brotherhood through a few points.
First, a completely new way of life developed in Medina based on this bond of brotherhood. And for the Arabs, this was a completely new thing because they could not think of anything outside of tribal relationships.
But after the rise of Islam, a relationship was established that was based on the creed or Islam. The ideal that Muslims hold for the infidels is caliphate. That is, in the past, all Muslim countries were roughly included in the Caliphate. And the Muslim countries would be loyal to the Caliph. But later Muslims adopted nationalism, imitating the Jews, in countries such as Iraq, Syria, Egypt, etc. And because of this, today Muslim countries are divided. When a Muslim country is attacked, another country does not come forward, but rather that Muslim country joins hands with the infidels.
Islam is a universal religion. In this regard, the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said that Islamic brotherhood is like a part of the body, in which one part of the body suffers and affects another part, similarly, if one Muslim brother is afflicted, it will affect another Muslim.
Nationalism is like a cancer that pushes Muslims towards selfishness.
Now let’s find out how Allah Almighty mentions the brotherhood of faith in the Quran. During his life in Mecca, the Messenger of Allah taught his companions that the bond of faith is more precious than the bond of blood.
For example, Allah Ta’ala said about the son of the Prophet Nu (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) that his son was not a member of his family, but rather he was a disbeliever.
And Noah called to his Lord and said, “My Lord, indeed my son is of my family; and indeed, Your promise is true; and You are the most just of judges!” He said, “O Noah, indeed he is not of your family; indeed, he is [one whose] work was other than righteous, so ask Me not for that about which you have no knowledge. Indeed, I advise you, lest you be among the ignorant.”
(Quran 11:45-46)
In this verse we see that Nu Alai Salam prayed to Allah to protect his family. But Allah has clearly stated that his son is not a member of his family.
The believers are but brothers, so make settlement between your brothers. And fear Allah that you may receive mercy.
(Quran 49:10)
Through this verse, Allah Almighty is declaring that Muslims should sever ties with infidels.
O you who have believed, do not take your fathers or your brothers as allies if they have preferred disbelief over belief. And whoever does so among you – then it is those who are the wrongdoers.
(Quran 9:23)
In this verse, Allah Almighty says that if a community is not Muslim, then one should cut off ties with that community.
Allah also said:
O you who have believed, do not take My enemies and your enemies as allies, extending to them affection while they have disbelieved in what came to you of the truth, having driven out the Prophet and yourselves [only] because you believe in Allah, your Lord. If you have come out for jihad in My cause and seeking means to My approval, [take them not as friends]. You confide to them affection, but I am most knowing of what you have concealed and what you have declared. And whoever does it among you has certainly strayed from the soundness of the way.
If they gain dominance over you, they would be to you as enemies and extend against you their hands and their tongues with evil, and they wish you would disbelieve.
Never will your relatives or your children benefit you; the Day of Resurrection He will judge between you. And Allah, of what you do, is Seeing.
(Quran 60:1-3)
As soon as Madan converted to Islam, the previous laws were abolished. At that time, several verses were revealed among the Jews and Muslims.
O you who have believed, remember the favor of Allah upon you when a people determined to extend their hands [in aggression] against you, but He withheld their hands from you; and fear Allah. And upon Allah let the believers rely.
(Quran 5:11)
O you who have believed, if you obey a party of those who were given the Scripture, they would turn you back, after your belief, [to being] unbelievers. And how could you disbelieve while to you are being recited the verses of Allah and among you is His Messenger? And whoever holds firmly to Allah has [indeed] been guided to a straight path.
(Quran 3:100-101)
In this verse, Muslims are again warned that if they follow the path of the Jews, they will become disbelievers.
And never will the Jews or the Christians approve of you until you follow their religion. Say, “Indeed, the guidance of Allah is the [only] guidance.” If you were to follow their desires after what has come to you of knowledge, you would have against Allah no protector or helper.
(Quran 2:120)
First, Allah Almighty says to sever ties with non-Muslims and then says that Muslims should take them as friends. The sense of loyalty means that Muslims’ loyalty is to Allah and His Messenger alone, and to no one else. Not only Jews and infidels, Allah Almighty commands Muslims not to befriend hypocrites and unfaithful people.
Because hypocrites or traitors consider the infidels as their own and hate Islam. Allah says in this regard:
Give tidings to the hypocrites that there is for them a painful punishment.
Those who take disbelievers as allies instead of the believers. Do they seek with them honor [through power]? But indeed, honor belongs to Allah entirely.
(Quran 4:138-139)
We may ask why we should not have any relationship with the infidels, when Allah Almighty says:
O Prophet, fight against the disbelievers and the hypocrites and be harsh upon them. And their refuge is Hell, and wretched is the destination.
(Quran 9:73)
Thus a group was formed in Medina based on faith.
Your ally is none but Allah and [therefore] His Messenger and those who have believed – those who establish prayer and give zakah, and they bow [in worship]. And whoever is an ally of Allah and His Messenger and those who have believed – indeed, the party of Allah – they will be the predominant.
(Quran 5:55-56)
The companions understood that friends are only those who share the same faith. The foundation between the Muhajirin and the Ansar is mutual trust.
Point number two: The reason for the love between the companions is that they love each other for the sake of Allah. They loved each other because Allah Almighty commanded them to love each other. Point number three: The help of the companions was not limited to financial assistance. There was sincerity between them, so they encouraged each other to do good deeds.
Point number 4 We see from the incident of Abdullah ibn Auf that he was a very funny person. He tried to be self-reliant without anyone’s help. Not only he but all the Muhajirin were responsible. Finally, it can be said that this sense of brotherhood is a special blessing from Allah.
The sign of true faith is morals, generosity, and good character. And the companions had all these characteristics. We conclude the discussion by discussing some of the dignity of the Ansar.
The first dignity of the Ansar is that they were named by Allah Himself. Secondly, Allah Almighty says in the Quran that He is pleased with the Ansar.
