Yet photographs and popular retellings often blur important distinctions. The golden Dome of the Rock is not the same building as the Al-Aqsa congregational prayer hall, and neither should be confused with a surviving structure built by Prophet Suleman.

To follow the story clearly, it helps to separate three layers: the sacred place described in religious tradition, the buildings constructed there at different times, and the ancient events associated with Jerusalem’s destruction and renewal.

Bayt al-Maqdis and Al-Aqsa: understanding the names

In Islamic usage, Bayt al-Maqdis is associated with Jerusalem and its holy sanctuary. The name Al-Aqsa can refer to the wider sacred precinct as well as, more specifically, the congregational mosque at its southern end. This broader and narrower usage explains why photographs labelled “Al-Aqsa” do not always show the same building.

Archnet’s architectural history of Jami’ al-Aqsa makes that distinction and describes the mosque’s multiple construction and restoration phases. Its present form is the result of a long architectural history, not a single untouched building campaign.

When reading an account of the site, ask whether the author means the entire enclosure, a particular prayer hall or a monument within the enclosure. Clarifying that one point resolves much of the apparent contradiction between descriptions.

The Night Journey and the sacred place

The opening verse of Surah al-Isra describes the Night Journey from the Sacred Mosque to the Farthest Mosque, whose surroundings are blessed. It establishes religious significance without providing a plan of the buildings visible today. See Quran 17:1.

Sacred geography and architectural dating answer different questions. A place can be revered in a tradition long before a later monumental structure is erected there. It is therefore unnecessary to assign the golden dome to an earlier prophet in order to explain why the site matters to Muslims.

A report from Abu Dharr identifies the Sacred Mosque and Al-Aqsa as the earliest two mosques and gives an interval of forty years between them. It does not name the builders in that report. Identifying those builders requires a separate traditional argument, rather than adding names to the hadith. See Sahih al-Bukhari 3366.

Suleman’s connection with Bayt al-Maqdis

A narration in Sunan an-Nasa’i connects Suleman with the completion of Bayt al-Maqdis and three requests: judgement agreeing with God’s judgement, a distinctive kingdom, and forgiveness for a person coming sincerely to pray there. The report is graded sahih in the edition linked here. See Sunan an-Nasa’i 693.

This explains an important part of the site’s place in Islamic memory. It does not date the present tiled walls or identify an existing dome as Suleman’s work.

The emphasis of the narration is also worth preserving. Judgement and sincere worship appear beside kingship. The sanctuary is not simply a monument to the ruler who built it; it is a place whose purpose reaches beyond royal prestige.

Which building is the Dome of the Rock?

The Dome of the Rock is the octagonal shrine with the familiar golden dome. Its initial Umayyad construction under Abd al-Malik was completed in 691–692 CE. The visible monument belongs to early Islamic architectural history, although it surrounds a rock with much older religious associations. See Archnet’s Dome of the Rock record.

The Al-Aqsa congregational prayer hall stands elsewhere within the same precinct. It has its own history of Umayyad building, earthquake damage and later rebuilding. Calling every photograph of a golden dome “the Al-Aqsa prayer hall” obscures that difference.

Later maintenance and restoration are not incidental footnotes. Stone, timber, tiles and roofs change over time, while a site’s religious significance may continue. Understanding a monument therefore means asking both when it originated and how its surviving fabric developed.

The rock, the cave and stories of the Ark

The rock beneath the dome has attracted many traditions. Accounts of hidden chambers, a suspended rock or the Ark concealed below it require more than a dramatic illustration or a repeated story. This article does not present a verified discovery of the Ark at the site.

One frequently confused source is 2 Maccabees. Its account describes Jeremiah hiding sacred objects in a cave on the mountain from which Moses viewed the promised inheritance. The explanatory note identifies that setting with Mount Nebo—not a cave beneath the Dome of the Rock. See 2 Maccabees 2:4–8.

That passage is a religious tradition about concealment, not a modern excavation report. Changing its location to Jerusalem would both misread the source and give a misleading impression of archaeological support.

A city important to more than one tradition

Jerusalem’s significance in Judaism, Christianity and Islam overlaps, but the traditions do not identify every location in the same way. Careful description makes those differences easier to understand without ranking the sincerity of different communities.

For example, Christian tradition associates Jesus’ crucifixion and burial with the site commemorated by the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. It should not be casually relocated to the Al-Aqsa precinct. The Custody of the Holy Land’s account of the basilica explains its devotional setting.

The purpose here is historical and religious orientation, not a forecast of modern conflict. Ancient narratives do not justify blaming present-day populations collectively or treating violence against civilians as inevitable.

Jeremiah and Jerusalem’s crisis

The story then turns towards the Babylonian threat. In the biblical narrative, Jeremiah warns of disaster and faces resistance. Chapter 38 describes his confinement in a cistern and his rescue through the intervention of Ebed-melech. See Jeremiah 38.

This is more specific than saying that an entire people responded in one way. The narrative contains opposing decisions: some seek to silence the prophet, while another person acts to save him. Preserving those differences avoids turning a complicated account into a stereotype.

Jeremiah is often discussed in later Islamic historical writing under forms of the name Armiya. His name is not supplied in the Quran’s account of the two episodes of destruction in Surah al-Isra. Connecting particular biblical figures with that passage belongs to interpretation, not to its explicit wording.

AI-generated illustration inspired by Babylonian glazed-brick art; not a photograph of an authenticated museum object.

Nebuchadnezzar: two kings of Judah, two different episodes

Popular summaries sometimes combine Jehoiachin and Zedekiah into one king. The biblical account distinguishes them. Jehoiachin is taken into exile in the Babylonian capture of Jerusalem in 597 BCE; Nebuchadnezzar appoints his uncle, whose royal name is Zedekiah. See 2 Kings 24.

Zedekiah later rebels. The subsequent siege ends in the destruction of Jerusalem and its temple, conventionally dated to 587 or 586 BCE. The account of his capture and blinding belongs to this later episode, not to Jehoiachin’s earlier deportation. See 2 Kings 25.

Keeping the two rulers separate is a small correction with a large effect: it restores the sequence of surrender, imposed kingship, rebellion and destruction. It also prevents a memorable detail from being attached to the wrong person.

Material evidence can add context without replacing the texts. The British Museum’s Lachish ostracon II, for example, preserves Hebrew writing on pottery from Iron Age Lachish. Such objects deserve identification by their actual catalogue records rather than being assigned invented quotations or numbers.

Babylon’s gardens and the limits of reconstruction

Babylon’s reputation also includes the Hanging Gardens. Their precise location and identification remain debated. Assyriologist Stephanie Dalley has argued for a connection with Sennacherib’s Nineveh rather than Nebuchadnezzar’s Babylon; her Oxford research profile outlines that work.

A familiar picture of terraced gardens is consequently not a settled reconstruction. Architectural imagination can make a story vivid, but the uncertainty should remain visible. The same principle applies to imagined throne rooms, lost temples and underground chambers in Jerusalem.

Reading destruction and renewal responsibly

Quran 17:4–8 describes wrongdoing, consequences, restoration and the possibility of mercy. The verses do not name Nebuchadnezzar, Jeremiah or modern states. Later explanations propose historical identifications, and those proposals should be labelled rather than inserted into a translation.

Bayt al-Maqdis is best understood by holding these layers together without collapsing them: scripture explains sacred meaning, architectural study dates buildings, and historical sources help reconstruct political events. None needs to impersonate the others. That approach makes Jerusalem’s history clearer while respecting the depth of the traditions attached to it.

Understand Bayt al-Maqdis, the
