In the Quran, these gifts do not simply make two kings extraordinary. They place the use of power under a moral obligation.

Dawood is also known in English as David, and Suleman as Solomon. This article follows their connection through the Quranic account, then examines two questions raised by it: what researchers have learned about bird communication, and how later stories about Solomon differ from the scriptural description of his authority over the jinn.

Dawood: authority joined to responsibility

Dawood’s kingship is not described as permission to do whatever a ruler desires. In Quran 38:26, he is instructed to judge justly and not let personal desire divert him. The emphasis is on the responsibility of deciding between people, not merely possessing wealth or territory.

That is a useful starting point for reading the episodes that follow. A ruler may command others and still need guidance, repentance and restraint. Political success is not presented as a substitute for moral judgement.

The Quran also associates Dawood with the Zabur, traditionally understood as the Psalms. This is stated in Quran 17:55. Remembering the passage helps keep his roles together: the king who governs is also a servant engaged in worship. His religious significance cannot be reduced to a list of military achievements.

Iron, armour and the dignity of skilled work

Surah Saba connects Dawood with mountains and birds joining in praise, and with iron being made pliable for him. It then describes the making of armour with attention to its links. These are the gifts and instructions in Quran 34:10–11.

The detail about workmanship deserves attention. Armour is useful because its parts work together: badly proportioned links would undermine the whole object. The passage combines an exceptional gift with a practical task requiring care.

The text does not supply an excavated workshop, a surviving suit of armour or a metallurgical specification. An illustration of chain mail can help readers picture linked metalwork, but it cannot serve as a photograph of something Dawood made. Nor should the verse be converted into an unsupported claim that no earlier society understood iron.

AI-generated illustration of linked ironwork; not an authenticated artifact or a reconstruction of Dawood’s workshop.

Suleman’s kingdom and his prayer

Suleman succeeds Dawood in the Quranic narrative. Surah Sad describes him as a devoted servant and records his prayer for forgiveness and a kingdom unlike one granted to anyone after him. The subsequent account mentions the wind and workers among the jinn. See Quran 38:30–40.

These details belong to the religious account of a distinctive divine gift. They should not be treated as instructions for acquiring the same powers. Suleman’s kingdom is not a technical course that another person can reproduce by finding a secret word, ring or machine.

The sequence also matters: the prayer begins with forgiveness, not a declaration of independence from God. The account repeatedly connects his unusual authority with service and dependence. That gives the story a different centre from a fantasy about unlimited personal control.

What does understanding birds mean here?

In Quran 27:16–19, Suleman identifies knowledge of birds’ speech as a gift. His forces include humans, jinn and birds. When he understands an ant’s warning to its companions, his response is a prayer for gratitude and righteous action.

The account does not portray small creatures as irrelevant beside a great king. Their communication interrupts the military scene and changes its focus. Attention moves from the scale of the army to the vulnerability of animals in its path.

Later in the same surah, the hoopoe brings information about Sheba. The bird is part of the narrative’s movement towards an encounter between two rulers. Reading these scenes together shows why birds are more than an ornamental detail in the story.

The Quranic claim about Suleman’s understanding is a matter of revelation for Muslims. Scientific studies of ordinary birds address a narrower question: what information can calls convey, and how do other birds respond?

What experiments have actually shown

A well-known study of Japanese tits tested responses to recorded calls. One call sequence prompted scanning, another prompted approach, and the normal combination elicited both behaviours. Reversing the order did not produce the same response. The researchers interpreted this as evidence of meaningful combination in that species. See the 2016 experimental study in Nature Communications.

This is an important finding, but it is not evidence that every bird speaks a complete human-style language. It does not translate the speech of a hoopoe or test an event involving Suleman. The experiment concerns observable responses under specific conditions.

That distinction allows wonder without exaggeration. A bird’s call can carry meaningful information even when it is unlike an English sentence. Conversely, a surprising communication system does not independently establish a supernatural ability to understand every creature.

The jinn in Suleman’s service

The Quran describes jinn undertaking work for Suleman by God’s permission. Surah Saba mentions large structures and vessels, while Surah Sad refers to builders and divers. The emphasis is on commanded work within an exceptional kingdom, not on a catalogue of spells. See Quran 34:12–14 and 38:36–38.

The distinction between divine permission and independent magical power is essential. A narrative about a prophet should not quietly become an endorsement of later manuals claiming to summon spirits.

A report in Sahih al-Bukhari also recalls the uniqueness of Suleman’s prayer. Prophet Muhammad describes an encounter with a jinn during prayer and says that he remembered Suleman’s request when deciding against displaying the creature bound in the mosque. See Sahih al-Bukhari 3423.

For the wider terminology, our guide to jinn in Islam distinguishes jinn, Iblis and related popular labels.

Rings, demon lists and later Solomon stories

Over time, Solomon became a central figure in stories about seals, demons and hidden knowledge. A book attributed to him, however, is not automatically a document he wrote. Its date, language, manuscript history and religious setting must be examined.

Research on the Testament of Solomon and related traditions studies their development and transmission across later religious communities. It does not treat a surviving manuscript as an autograph from the king’s court. See Boustan and Beshay’s study of Solomonic demon traditions.

Such texts can be valuable evidence for how later people imagined Solomon. That is a different use from citing their supernatural details as confirmed events in his life. Our separate article on Solomon’s portals in later traditions discusses that distinction further.

Wealth is not the whole story

Accounts of Solomon often invite speculation about gold, distant mines and immense fleets. Historical claims need their own evidence: an inscription’s date, an object’s findspot, or a text that can actually be connected to the proposed ruler. A valuable ancient object does not establish its royal owner simply because it comes from the right broad region.

The same care applies to comparisons with other cultures. Two traditions featuring a wise ruler and a bird do not, by resemblance alone, prove that one was copied directly from the other. Connections are questions to investigate, not conclusions supplied by a shared motif.

The enduring thread in Dawood and Suleman’s stories is clearer than those disputed identifications. Knowledge should lead to gratitude; judgement requires fairness; and power remains something for which its holder is accountable. The birds, armour and remarkable kingdom enrich that lesson without replacing it.

Dawood’s armour-making, Suleman’s kingdom, bird
