Language is one of the clearest signs of human social and intellectual life. Through it, people teach, remember, negotiate, worship and pass knowledge between generations. The Quran treats this ability as a gift and a sign, beginning with Adam being taught \u201cthe names.\u201d Modern research adds another perspective by showing how language emerges through brains, bodies and communities.<\/p>\n

The source lecture explores speech as a boundary between human beings and other creatures. Adam was taught the names<\/h2>\n

A more defensible view is that language and thought influence one another. Words make some distinctions easier to preserve and discuss; human perception and reasoning also shape the languages communities create.<\/p>\n

Writing came much later than language<\/h2>\n

Spoken and signed languages leave few direct traces, while writing produces durable artefacts. The earliest known writing systems are only several thousand years old, but anatomically modern humans are far older. The late appearance of writing does not imply that earlier people lacked structured language.<\/p>\n

Writing changed civilisation by allowing records to travel beyond a speaker\u2019s memory. Administration, law, literature and scripture could be stabilised and copied. At the same time, oral cultures can preserve complex genealogies, poetry and teaching without a script.<\/p>\n

For Quranic study, this distinction matters. The Quran was recited and memorised as well as written. Its preservation belongs to a culture in which oral and written transmission reinforced each other.<\/p>\n
