When argument became ridicule<\/h2>\n

As the public message continued, some opponents of the Prophet Muhammad moved from objection to ridicule. The Quran records labels such as poet, magician, or madman. These accusations contradicted one another, yet each served the same purpose: to discourage people from listening seriously.<\/p>\n

Calling a messenger \u201cmad\u201d dismissed his warning without answering it. Calling the Quran poetry attempted to reduce revelation to human art. Calling the message magic suggested that its effect on listeners was manipulation rather than truth. The changing labels show that the campaign was not a single evidence-based explanation.<\/p>\n

Objections to a human messenger<\/h2>\n

The Quran also records surprise that the messenger ate food and walked in the markets. Opponents demanded an angel, treasure, or a special garden. Yet a human messenger was essential to the moral purpose of revelation: people could observe faith, patience, family responsibility, trade, worship, and public conduct lived within ordinary human conditions.<\/p>\n

If the messenger had been an angel untouched by hunger, grief, work, or social pressure, human beings could claim that his example was impossible to follow. The Prophet\u2019s humanity was not a weakness in the message; it made ethical imitation meaningful.<\/p>\n

Demands for spectacular signs<\/h2>\n

Surah al-Isra lists extraordinary demands: a spring bursting from the ground, gardens with rivers, pieces of the sky falling, a house of gold, or an ascent into heaven accompanied by a written book. The passage answers by directing the Prophet to affirm that he is a human messenger and that glory belongs to God.<\/p>\n

This response does not deny God\u2019s power. It rejects the assumption that opponents may control revelation by setting an endless sequence of tests. A demand can appear to seek evidence while actually postponing a decision. When one condition is met, another can always be added.<\/p>\n

The Quran\u2019s alternative<\/h2>\n

The Quran repeatedly invites examination of its meaning, consistency, moral vision, accounts of earlier peoples, and signs within creation. It asks people to use reason and conscience rather than treating faith as entertainment. The central question is not whether a messenger performs on command, but whether the message is true and what response truth requires.<\/p>\n
