Ibn Abbas, seven earths and Quranic interpretation<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Reports attributed to Ibn Abbas are important in the history of Quranic interpretation, but they differ in transmission and meaning. A quotation should be traced to its earliest accessible source before it is used to support a modern cosmological theory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Quranic starting point<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Quran 65:12 states that God created seven heavens and \u201cof the earth, the like of them.\u201d Commentators have proposed several readings, including layers, regions or multiple earths. The verse does not itself describe seven inhabited planets, duplicate Adams or travel routes between worlds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Authentic hadith also use the expression \u201cseven earths,\u201d including warnings about unjustly taking land. Those reports establish the phrase within the tradition but do not settle every cosmological question later readers attach to it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How to handle reports from Ibn Abbas<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

A widely circulated report attributes to Ibn Abbas a description of seven earths with counterparts to familiar prophetic figures. Scholars have discussed its chain, wording and whether it reflects earlier narrative material. It should be introduced as an attributed report with scholarly disagreement, not as an uncontested saying of the Prophet or a scientific discovery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Classical tafsir often preserves multiple opinions without declaring every report equally authoritative. Modern writers should retain that transparency: cite the collection, distinguish Companion interpretation from Prophetic hadith, and note disputes over authenticity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Planets, multiverses and modern claims<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Astronomy has confirmed thousands of planets beyond the solar system, but that evidence does not identify them with the \u201cseven earths\u201d of a particular interpretation. The number, physical conditions and inhabitants of exoplanets are empirical questions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Similarly, multiverse models do not authenticate a medieval report. A possible analogy can be mentioned, but it should not be described as proof that scripture predicted a specific modern theory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Responsible conclusion<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The verse invites reflection on the scale of creation. The responsible conclusion is to preserve the range of interpretation, identify the grade of each report, and avoid claiming more than the sources establish.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\r\n\r\n

Why attribution requires more than a famous name<\/h2>\n

Ibn Abbas is associated with a large body of interpretive material transmitted through different students and later compilations. Scholars do not assign every statement bearing his name the same strength. They examine the chain of transmission, compare wordings and ask whether the report appears with supporting routes or with transmitters criticised by hadith specialists.<\/p>\n

Even when an attribution is accepted, interpretation still matters. Pre-modern language about earths, heavens or created realms does not automatically map onto planets, dimensions or parallel universes as those terms are used today. Translation can make an older image sound more technically precise than the Arabic source.<\/p>\n

A transparent way to cite such reports<\/h2>\n

An article should name the collection and, where possible, the chain or scholarly grading. It should quote only the relevant wording, explain major variants and distinguish the report from Quran 65:12 itself. If authenticity or meaning is disputed, that disagreement belongs in the article rather than in a hidden footnote.<\/p>\n\n\n
