A community facing sudden loss<\/h2>\n

The death of Prophet Muhammad in 632 CE created an immediate religious and political crisis in Madinah. Umar ibn al-Khattab was overcome by shock, while Abu Bakr addressed the community and recited Quran 3:144: Muhammad was a messenger, and messengers had passed away before him. The episode shows both Umar’s intense attachment to the Prophet and his willingness to accept correction when the evidence was placed before him.<\/p>\n

The early Muslim community then had to decide how leadership would continue. Discussions at Saqifah took place under pressure and were not a simple modern election. Abu Bakr ultimately became the first caliph, while Umar became one of his most influential advisers. Their relationship was not based on automatic agreement; the strongest examples show respectful disagreement followed by a reasoned decision.<\/p>\n

The dispute over zakat<\/h2>\n

When groups in Arabia refused obligations associated with the Madinah government, Abu Bakr decided to act against those withholding zakat. Umar initially questioned the decision and cited a prophetic statement about the protection of people who professed faith. Abu Bakr answered that prayer and zakat could not be separated as public obligations. Sahih al-Bukhari records that Umar later accepted Abu Bakr’s reasoning.<\/p>\n

This report should not be reduced to a slogan about warfare. It records a legal and political dispute at a moment when the new state was fragmenting. The account also demonstrates that senior Companions could disagree, examine evidence and change their minds.<\/p>\n

Preserving the Quran<\/h2>\n

After heavy losses among Quran reciters at Yamama, Umar urged Abu Bakr to commission a collected written copy. Abu Bakr and Zayd ibn Thabit were initially hesitant because the Prophet had not produced such a bound compilation. They eventually judged the project necessary. Zayd gathered written material and verified it with those who had memorised the text. The collected sheets later remained with Abu Bakr, then Umar and then Hafsa.<\/p>\n

Umar’s role here was advisory rather than solitary. The project depended on consultation, careful verification and the work of Zayd and other members of the community.<\/p>\n
