The ninth year after the Hijra included the Tabuk expedition and important changes to the pilgrimage arrangements. Accounts of the late Medinan period also describe questions within the Prophet Muhammad\u2019s household. These subjects are best kept distinct, with attention to what each source actually dates and records.<\/p>\n

After the expedition<\/h2>\n

Tabuk had tested the community\u2019s preparation and commitment. Quran 9:117 remembers the hardship experienced by those who followed the Prophet, while the following verses discuss repentance and truthfulness. The political and religious life of Medina continued after the force returned.<\/p>\n

Popular accounts attach several miracle stories to the journey. Details about a lost camel or the exact words spoken during a shortage require identifiable reports. They should not be blended into Quranic passages or repeated with garbled names as though every element has the same evidential basis.<\/p>\n

The household\u2019s choice<\/h2>\n

Quran 33:28\u201329 addresses the Prophet\u2019s wives with a choice between a gracious release with provision and remaining committed to God, His Messenger and the hereafter. It does not present two versions of the same option, nor does it describe every lawful comfort as forbidden.<\/p>\n

In Bukhari 4786, Aisha recalls that the Prophet began with her and allowed time to consult her parents. She chose to remain, and the report says that his other wives made the same choice. This narration establishes their response; it does not itself give a precise date within 9 AH.<\/p>\n

A separate recollection in Bukhari 2567 describes periods when no cooking fire was lit in the households. Aisha mentions dates, water and milk received from neighbours. The report concerns limited provisions, not three consecutive months in which nobody ate anything at all.<\/p>\n

Keeping simplicity in perspective<\/h2>\n

Material simplicity should not be confused with a command to reject every good provision. Quran 7:32 challenges the prohibition of God\u2019s adornment and good things. That verse supplies an important balance when discussing the Prophet\u2019s household and the choices described in Surah al-Ahzab.<\/p>\n

Family tensions also should not be retold as entertaining threats of violence. The securely sourced account of the wives\u2019 choice is sufficient to explain the issue here without invented dialogue or exaggerated descriptions of anger.<\/p>\n

Abu Bakr leads the pilgrimage<\/h2>\n

In the pilgrimage before the Prophet\u2019s Farewell Hajj, Abu Bakr led the pilgrims. Bukhari 4655 records Abu Hurayra\u2019s participation in public announcements at Mina. They stated that pagan pilgrimage and naked circumambulation of the Kaaba would not continue after that year.<\/p>\n

The report also describes Ali being sent to proclaim the opening of Surah Bara\u2019ah, another name for al-Tawbah. Abu Bakr\u2019s leadership and Ali\u2019s proclamation were connected responsibilities, not evidence that one person\u2019s part in the event should be erased.<\/p>\n

Treaties and protection still mattered<\/h2>\n

The opening of Surah al-Tawbah must be read beyond a single severe verse. Quran 9:4 preserves the agreed term for treaty partners who had kept their obligations. Verse 9:6 provides protection and safe passage for a polytheist seeking to hear the message.<\/p>\n

Those qualifications make it inaccurate to say that every relationship with every non-Muslim was simply abolished. The changes concerned specific arrangements and pilgrimage practices. Together, these events show a period of public transition and personal decision-making, leading towards the delegations and the Farewell Pilgrimage discussed next.<\/p>\n
