The conquest of Makkah marked a decisive change in the Prophet Muhammad\u2019s relationship with the city from which he had migrated. In the standard chronology, it took place in Ramadan, 8 AH. Reports about the entry describe armed resistance, assurances of safety and the restoration of the Kaaba to Islamic worship.<\/p>\n

Entering the city<\/h2>\n

The preceding article follows the events that brought the Muslim force towards Makkah. Here the focus is the entry and its immediate consequences. It is unnecessary to describe the force as the largest army in history: that claim is neither supported nor needed to explain the event\u2019s importance.<\/p>\n

Abu Hurayra\u2019s account in Sahih Muslim 1780c names Khalid ibn al-Walid, al-Zubayr and Abu Ubayda in different commands. It also describes fighting. Although the city\u2019s overall submission was rapid, calling the conquest entirely bloodless would conceal what this source reports.<\/p>\n

Assurances of safety<\/h2>\n

The same report records protection for people who entered Abu Sufyan\u2019s house, laid down their weapons or closed their doors. These assurances gave inhabitants concrete ways to avoid further fighting. They are more firmly documented than many elaborate speeches repeated in popular retellings.<\/p>\n

Stories of a general pardon express an important theme in Muslim remembrance of the conquest. Nevertheless, the familiar extended dialogue sometimes attached to that pardon should not automatically be treated as a verbatim transcript. A careful account distinguishes the well-attested safety announcements from additional biographical wording.<\/p>\n

The Kaaba and the removal of idols<\/h2>\n

Sahih al-Bukhari 4287 describes 360 idols around the Kaaba and the Prophet striking them with a stick while declaring the triumph of truth over falsehood. Quran 17:81 and 34:49 provide the scriptural language associated with this scene.<\/p>\n

For Muslims, this act represents the restoration of the sanctuary to worship of one God. The religious meaning does not require an invented description of what every inhabitant thought or felt. Political submission, public conversion and private conviction are related but distinct matters.<\/p>\n

An important limit to the amnesty<\/h2>\n

The sources do not support saying that no exceptions existed. Bukhari 1846 records an order concerning Ibn Khatal while he was holding the Kaaba\u2019s covering. The report is brief and should not be expanded with unsupported accusations, altered names or imagined details of his death.<\/p>\n

This is a historical account of a particular order during a conquest. It is not a permission for individuals today to punish opponents, attack sanctuaries or take the law into their own hands. A responsible retelling neither conceals the difficult report nor turns it into a general instruction.<\/p>\n

The Prophet and the Ansar<\/h2>\n

Another narration, Muslim 1780a, remembers the Ansar\u2019s concern that the Prophet\u2019s attachment to Makkah might separate him from them. He reassured them of his bond with the community to which he had migrated. Their emotional response is part of the conquest\u2019s human story, alongside its military and religious consequences.<\/p>\n

The entry into Makkah was not the end of the journey. Hunayn and the campaign around Taif followed before the return to Medina. Keeping those events in sequence avoids making the conquest appear to have settled every regional conflict at once.
