The truce and its alliances<\/h2>\n

The Treaty of Hudaybiyyah created a truce between the Muslims and Quraysh and allowed Arabian groups to align with either side. Khuza’ah associated with the Muslims, while Banu Bakr associated with Quraysh. Early biographical accounts report that an attack by Banu Bakr on Khuza’ah, with support from members of Quraysh, violated the truce.<\/p>\n

The names matter because older versions of this article confused both groups. Correctly identifying Khuza’ah and Banu Bakr prevents the conflict from becoming an inaccurate story about unnamed tribes.<\/p>\n

A strategic advance<\/h2>\n

The Prophet prepared an advance on Makkah while limiting information that might trigger a wider mobilisation. By this stage the balance of power had changed greatly from the early Makkan period. The Muslims approached with a large coalition, making prolonged resistance increasingly unlikely.<\/p>\n

Sahih al-Bukhari records Abu Sufyan observing the arriving groups. When Sa’d ibn Ubadah used words suggesting a day of destructive battle, the Prophet rejected that description and instead spoke of honouring the Kaaba. The correction is central to the event: military strength did not make unrestricted violence acceptable.<\/p>\n

Victory with limited fighting<\/h2>\n

Makkah largely came under Muslim control without a city-wide battle, although a limited clash occurred on one approach. The transition ended years of exclusion from the sanctuary and transformed the political centre of western Arabia. It should still be described soberly, without demeaning the defeated population or treating bloodshed as the measure of success.<\/p>\n
