Why Quraysh returned<\/h2>\n

About a year after Badr, a Quraysh-led force approached Madinah. The Battle of Uhud took place in 625 CE near Mount Uhud. The Muslim community had to decide how to respond, and Quran 3:121 refers to the Prophet leaving his household to position believers for battle.<\/p>\n

The archers’ assignment<\/h2>\n

The Prophet placed a group of archers under Abdullah ibn Jubayr at a position protecting the Muslim flank. Sahih al-Bukhari records a clear instruction not to leave whether the Muslims appeared to be winning or losing. The first stage of fighting seemed favourable to the Muslims, and many archers left in pursuit of spoils despite their commander’s warning.<\/p>\n

The exposed position allowed the opposing cavalry to attack from the rear. Order broke down, rumours spread and the Muslims suffered serious losses. The Prophet was wounded; a separate report describes Fatimah washing his wounds while Ali poured water.<\/p>\n

Loss without collective dehumanisation<\/h2>\n

Hamza ibn Abd al-Muttalib and many other Muslims were killed. Their deaths deserve sober treatment. Graphic embellishment and language that dehumanises the opposing side do not improve historical understanding. The Quran instead directs attention to disobedience, competing desires, endurance and forgiveness within the Muslim community itself.<\/p>\n

The immediate outcome<\/h2>\n

Uhud was a painful Muslim setback, but it did not end the community in Madinah. Quraysh did not occupy the city, and both sides withdrew. The deeper significance lies in the combination of military consequence and moral self-examination preserved in the Quran.<\/p>\n
