Source note: The Arabic word jihad has a wider meaning of striving or exertion. Armed fighting is discussed in the Quran with separate terms and within specific legal and historical contexts. This article avoids treating all conflict as \u201choly war.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

From endurance to permission<\/h2>\n

During the Makkan period, the early Muslims experienced persecution and displacement. After migration, the community in Madinah faced military threats and received permission to defend itself. Quran 22:39\u201340 links this permission to people who had been wronged and driven from their homes. The passage also mentions the protection of monasteries, churches, synagogues and mosques, placing religious security within the moral purpose of defence.<\/p>\n

Limits are part of the command<\/h2>\n

Quran 2:190 permits fighting against those who fight the believers but immediately prohibits transgression. That limit matters. Conflict cannot be discussed responsibly through sweeping hostility toward people of another religion or through language that celebrates suffering. The early campaigns belong to particular seventh-century disputes, alliances and threats; they are not a licence to treat peaceful neighbours as enemies.<\/p>\n

The Quran also directs Muslims to accept peace when the other side genuinely inclines to peace. This principle appears in Quran 8:61 and is illustrated by the Treaty of Hudaybiyyah, where a negotiated settlement was accepted despite terms that many companions initially found difficult.<\/p>\n

Ghazwa, sariyya and historical terminology<\/h2>\n

Later historical writing often uses ghazwa<\/em> for an expedition in which the Prophet personally participated and sariyya<\/em> for a detachment he did not personally lead. These labels help organise the biography, but they do not by themselves explain the purpose, scale or outcome of each event. Some expeditions involved combat; others ended without battle or focused on security, information or diplomacy.<\/p>\n
