From persecution to a vulnerable state<\/h2>\n

After the Hijra, the Muslim community was no longer only a persecuted minority in Makkah. It had responsibilities for the security of Madinah while remaining in conflict with Quraysh. Armed expeditions developed in this setting of migration, confiscated property, caravan routes and competing alliances.<\/p>\n

Organisation before Badr<\/h2>\n

The early Muslim force was not a permanent professional army in the modern sense. Participants were drawn from the community for particular expeditions. Command depended on recognised leadership, consultation and agreed objectives. Later biographies list patrols and commanders, but exact details should be checked case by case.<\/p>\n

The Quran permits fighting to those who had been wronged in Quran 22:39\u201340<\/a>. These verses connect permission with expulsion and persecution; they should not be reduced to a general command detached from context.<\/p>\n

Discipline and covenants<\/h2>\n

Military organisation was also moral organisation. Sahih Muslim 1787<\/a> reports that Hudhayfah ibn al-Yaman and his father had promised Quraysh not to fight at Badr. The Prophet sent them back and honoured their pledge even though the Muslim force needed support.<\/p>\n

At Badr, the Quran describes believers appealing for help and being instructed to remain steadfast: Quran 8:9\u201312<\/a>. Religious reliance did not eliminate planning, but planning was not treated as permission for private revenge or uncontrolled seizure.<\/p>\n
