The Second Pledge of Aqaba helped prepare the way for the Prophet Muhammad\u2019s migration to Medina. Muslims from Yathrib, the city later known as Medina, offered more than a welcome. They undertook to protect him and share the risks of the community he would lead.<\/p>\n

The event belongs to the final Meccan period, shortly before the Hijra. It followed earlier meetings and teaching in Yathrib. Understanding those stages helps explain why the second pledge became such an important commitment.<\/p>\n

Teaching before the migration<\/h2>\n

Islam had begun to spread in Yathrib before the Prophet arrived. Mus\u2018ab ibn Umayr was among the early teachers there. Al-Bara ibn Azib recalls Mus\u2018ab and Ibn Umm Maktum teaching the Quran before the arrival of other companions and, eventually, the Prophet. See Sahih al-Bukhari 3925<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Learning therefore preceded the new political situation. People were hearing the Quran, practising their faith and forming relationships through which the community could grow. The pledge did not create that earlier work out of nothing; it built upon it.<\/p>\n

The two main Arab tribal groupings involved were Aws and Khazraj. They should not be confused with similarly sounding names for entirely different peoples. Nor does the presence of Muslim representatives mean that every resident of Yathrib had already accepted Islam.<\/p>\n

A meeting at night<\/h2>\n

The traditional biographical account describes seventy-three men and two women meeting the Prophet secretly at Aqaba during the pilgrimage season. His uncle al-Abbas ibn Abd al-Muttalib accompanied him and emphasized the seriousness of providing protection. A modern presentation of that account appears in When the Moon Split: the second pledge of Aqabah<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The secrecy reflected the risks of the meeting. A promise to receive the Prophet could expose the participants to opposition from Quraysh. The decision therefore concerned families and communities, not only the individuals present that night.<\/p>\n

Al-Abbas\u2019s role also highlights the importance of clear expectations. An offer of shelter could not be treated as a casual invitation if it might be withdrawn when danger appeared.<\/p>\n

What the commitment involved<\/h2>\n

In the biographical narrative, protection is compared with the protection people gave their own families. The participants also express concern that the Prophet might later leave them. His answer assures them of a continuing bond rather than a temporary arrangement. The title of this episode reflects that reassurance.<\/p>\n

The same account describes Paradise as the promised reward. It does not present a promise of personal wealth or an entitlement to political office. Its religious meaning and its practical obligations belong together.<\/p>\n

That distinction helps explain the difference between sympathy and commitment. Offering protection meant accepting responsibilities that could become costly. Yet the pledge was also an act of belief, not merely a bargain over advantages.<\/p>\n

The ethical content of allegiance<\/h2>\n

Ubada ibn al-Samit identifies himself as one of the representatives who pledged allegiance. His report includes worshipping God alone and rejecting theft, unlawful sexual relations, unlawful killing and plunder. It appears in Sahih al-Bukhari 3893<\/a>.<\/p>\n

This report keeps the moral content of allegiance in view. A community\u2019s external difficulties did not make honesty, human life or other people\u2019s property irrelevant. Belonging brought obligations concerning conduct as well as loyalty.<\/p>\n

The shorter hadith and the longer biographical narrative serve different purposes. Neither should be made to supply every detail found in the other. Reading them together allows the central event to remain clear without turning reconstructed conversations into a single word-for-word transcript.<\/p>\n

Why Aqaba remained important<\/h2>\n

Later recollections show how highly participants valued the pledge. Rafi, a participant at Aqaba, told his son that he would not have preferred participation at Badr instead. This memory is recorded in Sahih al-Bukhari 3993<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Such a comparison expresses the importance of an early commitment made before later outcomes were known. The pledge created the conditions in which migration could become a realistic next step, but the move itself still required preparation.<\/p>\n

The story consequently ends with responsibility rather than instant security. A bond had been formed. The following episodes consider how the companions migrated and how that promise of welcome became daily life in Medina.<\/p>\n
