Two influential conversions<\/h2>\n

Hamza ibn Abd al-Muttalib, the Prophet Muhammad’s uncle, and Umar ibn al-Khattab became prominent supporters of the early Muslim community. Muslim memory often places their conversions during a period of increasing pressure in Makkah. Their social standing offered reassurance, but neither conversion immediately ended persecution.<\/p>\n

Hamza in the biographical tradition<\/h2>\n

Later biographies connect Hamza’s conversion with an insult directed at the Prophet near al-Safa. In the widely repeated account, Hamza returned from hunting, confronted Abu Jahl and declared his support for Muhammad. The broad association is important in sira, but the detailed dialogue is not preserved in the major canonical hadith collections and should be labelled as later historical narration.<\/p>\n

Hamza later fought at Badr and was killed at Uhud. His significance should not be reduced to physical strength: he represented family support for a community whose members often lacked protection.<\/p>\n

What authenticated reports say about Umar<\/h2>\n

Sahih al-Bukhari 3867<\/a> remembers Umar pressuring Sa’id ibn Zayd and Umar’s sister before he himself became Muslim. This confirms that his conversion followed a period of opposition, although it does not reproduce the complete popular story involving a written copy of Surah Ta Ha.<\/p>\n

After Umar accepted Islam, people gathered near his house. Sahih al-Bukhari 3865<\/a> reports that al-‘As ibn Wa’il publicly extended clan protection and the crowd dispersed. Another report preserves Ibn Mas’ud’s judgment that the community gained strength after Umar’s conversion: Sahih al-Bukhari 3863<\/a>.<\/p>\n

What changed\u2014and what did not<\/h2>\n

These conversions increased confidence and protection, but the Muslim community remained vulnerable. Some believers still migrated to Abyssinia, and later the wider community migrated to Madinah. The evidence therefore supports a gradual change in public confidence, not the claim that opposition ended overnight.<\/p>\n

Reading conversion stories responsibly<\/h2>\n
