The command to speak openly<\/h2>\n

The early Muslim message first spread through close relationships. Quran 26:214 then commanded the Prophet to warn his nearest relatives, and Quran 15:94 directed him to proclaim what he had been commanded. This shift increased the audience and made disagreement with Makkan religious custom more visible.<\/p>\n

The gathering at Mount Safa<\/h2>\n

Sahih al-Bukhari reports that the Prophet climbed Safa and called the branches of Quraysh. He asked whether they would believe him if he warned of cavalry approaching from the valley. They answered that they had known him to be truthful. He then warned them of accountability before God.<\/p>\n

Abu Lahab responded with hostility, and Surah al-Masad condemned his opposition and confidence in wealth. The report names a specific opponent. It does not justify describing every member of Quraysh as identical or permanently hostile.<\/p>\n

Why the message challenged Makkah<\/h2>\n

The call to worship one God questioned inherited religious practice. Makkan revelations also criticised neglect of the poor, pride in wealth, exploitation and denial of final accountability. Religious conviction, family honour, leadership and economic interests could therefore overlap in the response.<\/p>\n

Opposition took several forms: mockery, social pressure, demands for compromise and abuse of believers who lacked strong protection. Not every incident is equally authenticated, and not every opponent used violence. Several early opponents later joined the Muslim community, which is another reason to avoid fixed collective labels.<\/p>\n

Public proclamation without coercion<\/h2>\n

The Prophet’s task in this period was warning and communication. He did not possess state power in Makkah, and the community was instructed to endure, worship and continue speaking. Quran 109 rejects religious compromise while allowing a clear distinction between beliefs; it is not a command to force conversion.<\/p>\n
