The marriage of Prophet Muhammad to Khadijah bint Khuwaylid was one of the most important relationships of his early life. Long before the first Quranic revelation, it joined two people known in Meccan society for reliability, commercial experience and good character. Later, when Muhammad received the first revelation, Khadijah became his first source of reassurance and, in the Islamic tradition, the first person to affirm his mission.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Khadijah and commerce in Makkah<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Khadijah belonged to Quraysh and is remembered as a successful merchant. Trade connected Makkah with markets to the north and south, a setting reflected in Surah Quraysh<\/a>. Biographical accounts report that she employed agents to conduct business on her behalf and that Muhammad worked with one of her caravans before their marriage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Later biographies add details about the journey, including reports concerning her servant Maysarah and the favourable account he gave of Muhammad\u2019s conduct. These details are meaningful within the sira tradition, but they were recorded later than the Quran and the strongest hadith collections. They should therefore be presented as biographical reports rather than as facts established with equal certainty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The proposal and marriage<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The broad outline is consistent: Khadijah valued Muhammad\u2019s trustworthiness, a proposal followed, and the marriage took place before the beginning of his prophethood. Most traditional timelines place Muhammad at about twenty-five. Khadijah\u2019s precise age is less certain. Forty is the best-known traditional figure, while other reports give a younger age. A careful account acknowledges that difference instead of treating one estimate as beyond dispute.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The marriage endured for roughly twenty-five years, and Muhammad did not take another wife while Khadijah was alive. Their household included their daughters Zaynab, Ruqayyah, Umm Kulthum and Fatimah, and sons who died in childhood. Lists and names can vary slightly in the historical literature, particularly in discussions of al-Tayyib and al-Tahir.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A partnership before and after revelation<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The strongest evidence for Khadijah\u2019s character appears in the account of the first revelation. After the experience in the Cave of Hira, Muhammad returned home shaken. Khadijah reassured him by recalling his care for relatives, help for people in need, hospitality and support for those facing hardship. She then took him to her learned cousin Waraqah ibn Nawfal. This narrative appears at the opening of Sahih al-Bukhari 3<\/a> and in Sahih Muslim 160a<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This episode is central because it shows an active moral partnership. Khadijah did not offer reassurance without reason; she pointed to an established pattern in Muhammad\u2019s behaviour. Her response joined emotional support, ethical judgment and practical action.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Her place in early Islam<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Islamic tradition remembers Khadijah as the first believer. She supported Muhammad during the earliest and most vulnerable period of his mission, when public acceptance was limited and opposition in Makkah increased. Her resources, standing and confidence gave the household stability, but reducing her contribution to money alone would miss the point. The hadith record especially emphasizes loyalty, discernment and companionship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Quran does not narrate their marriage by name. Some commentators connect the language of divine provision in Quran 93:8<\/a> with the security Muhammad experienced during this period, although the verse itself is broader and should not be reduced to a single biographical event.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How Muhammad remembered Khadijah<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Reports from Aishah show that Muhammad continued to speak warmly of Khadijah after her death and maintained ties with her friends. In Sahih al-Bukhari 3820<\/a>, Aishah describes how frequently he remembered her. Sahih al-Bukhari 3817<\/a> records the glad tidings conveyed to Khadijah of a home in Paradise. These reports are stronger evidence than popular speeches that sometimes combine several narrations or add wording not found in the cited source.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Her death, traditionally dated to about 619 CE, was a profound loss. That year is commonly remembered in Muslim biography as the \u201cYear of Sorrow,\u201d also associated with the death of Muhammad\u2019s uncle Abu Talib.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Responding to common misunderstandings<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Was the marriage mainly a financial arrangement?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Commerce brought them into contact, but the surviving tradition describes a durable marriage marked by trust and loyalty. Khadijah\u2019s wealth is part of the historical setting; it is not a complete explanation of the relationship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Does the age difference make the account doubtful?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

No single modern assumption about age should be imposed on seventh-century Arabia. More importantly, the sources do not agree on Khadijah\u2019s exact age. Responsible writing reports the range of views and avoids using an uncertain number as the centre of the story.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Can every popular detail be treated as authentic?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

No. The Quran, rigorously authenticated hadith and later sira literature are different kinds of evidence. A moving story may still be historically uncertain. Good religious history tells readers where a claim comes from and how much confidence it deserves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why this marriage matters<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Khadijah\u2019s story matters because it places trust, moral insight and mutual support at the centre of an influential marriage. She recognized character before public success, steadied Muhammad at a moment of fear and remained associated with the formative years of Islam. For Muslim readers, her life is remembered not merely as background to another person\u2019s biography, but as an example of faith expressed through judgment, courage, generosity and steadfast companionship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
