Source note: \u201cJahiliyyah\u201d is a Quranic moral and religious concept, not a claim that pre-Islamic Arabs possessed no knowledge, culture or virtue. Arabia before Islam was diverse, and evidence varies by place and period.<\/em><\/p>\n

What does jahiliyyah mean?<\/h2>\n

Jahiliyyah is often translated as the \u201cage of ignorance.\u201d In the Quran, the related passages criticise particular attitudes and practices: unjust judgment, social display, unfounded assumptions about God and aggressive group pride. The term points to moral disorder and lack of revealed guidance rather than universal illiteracy or an absence of civilisation.<\/p>\n

It is therefore misleading to describe everything before Islam as darkness or to suggest that every person outside the first Muslim community behaved in the same way. The Quran itself recognises moral differences among earlier religious communities and repeatedly judges people by conduct and faith rather than by a simplistic racial or regional category.<\/p>\n

A diverse Arabian Peninsula<\/h2>\n

Sixth- and early seventh-century Arabia included pastoral communities, settled towns, trading centres and agricultural regions. Makkah was connected to pilgrimage and commerce, while Yemen had older states and links with the Red Sea and Indian Ocean worlds. Political influence also came from the Byzantine and Sasanian empires and their Arab allies.<\/p>\n

Religious life was equally varied. Many communities practised forms of Arabian polytheism, while Jewish and Christian communities were established in parts of the peninsula. Some individuals remembered as hanifs<\/em> sought the worship of one God outside the main organised communities. These groups should be described on their own evidence, not through hostile stereotypes.<\/p>\n

Social strengths and serious problems<\/h2>\n

Pre-Islamic Arabs valued poetry, eloquence, hospitality, courage and loyalty. The same tribal system could intensify cycles of retaliation and leave people without strong kinship protection vulnerable. Quranic reform addressed worship, economic exploitation, treatment of women and orphans, infanticide, justice and the limits of group loyalty.<\/p>\n
